Is uPVC recylable?

The question often arises as to whether uPCV is recylable.

Common uPVC products that are routinely recyclable include window frames, doors, facias and soffits, guttering and cladding. Many manufacturers use recyclable material in their windows, doors and uPVC frames, however typically virgin uPVC is used on the outer layer for quality and appearance.

Typically, recycling involves collecting old windows, removing non-recyclable materials such as coated door handles, rubber seals, etc., before being shredded into smaller pieces and then washed thoroughly to remove any contaminants. Once it has been melted into small pellets or powder, it can then be used in the manufacture of new uPVC products.

At Elmhurst, we are conscious that there has long been a concern about the use of plastics in the manufacturing of windows. This is why we offer a scrappage scheme, collecting your old windows, doors, conservatories and PVCu products for recycling. Not only does this support the environment, but saves you having to dispose of your old products safely and efficiently.

Our products contain uPVC where possible, however, for the ultimate in recyclable materials, it is also worth considering aluminium frames or traditional timber frames. Ultimately, these provide a contemporary or traditional feel unparalleled by uPVC.
