Glass Options
Choose The Right Glass For Your Replacement Windows
For the glass in your PVCu windows, our surveyors will help you choose from a wide range of glazing options.
Low E Glass
The most energy efficient type of glass for double glazing is low emissivity (Low E) glass. This often has an invisible coating of metal oxide, normally on one of the internal panes. It lets in light and heat, but cuts the amount of heat that can escape. Our very efficient windows are filled with argon gas. For maximum efficiency, the pane spacers, that is the set around the inside edges which keeps the two panes of glass apart, contain little or no metal – often known as ‘warm edge spacers’
Toughened Glass
Will remain, secure and safe, even when broken. Often known as tempered glass, this type is up to five times stronger than regular glass. Designed to shatter into small blunt pieces under pressure, it achieves its properties by heating regular glass at high temperatures and then cooling very quickly. Toughened glass is specified in doors and windows in ‘critical locations’ and below 800mm from floor level.
Laminated Safety Glazing
The same glass you find in car windscreens and shopfronts is often specified as an alternative to standard toughened glazing. Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. Laminated glass has the same strength as ordinary glass but consists of two pieces of glass containing a sandwich of plastic interlayer. If the glass does get broken this interlayer holds the whole piece in place so there is no hole left in the window for an intruder to get through.
Acoustic Glazing
Sound reduction glass is another form of laminated glass, particularly effective for those households near busy areas such as main roads and airports. By varying the thickness of the sheets of double glazing you will find a better sound insulation can be achieved.
Solar Glass
Great for keeping the heat out, especially in conservatories. Solar controlled glass allows sunlight to pass through panes whilst radiating and reflecting away a large degree of the sun’s heat. This type of glass is manufactured by tinting or applying a special coating therefore allowing a more comfortable, usable living space.
Easy Clean Glass
Perfect for hard to reach areas, like roofs. Self-cleaning (or easy clean) glass contains a transparent coating on the outside surface of the glass. This works to break down dirt by rainwater that hits the glass and taking the loosened dirt with it.
Diamond Lead
Nothing can better the timeless Old English look of diamond lead on your windows and doors. This dateless style adds an exclusive feel to both contemporary and traditional homes.
Square Lead
Square lead can lift your home and give you a new lease of life. Give your home a delightful elegant look with Elmhurst square leading.
Georgian Bar
The ever popular Georgian bar option will add to your windows an air of sophistication. The bars sit within the sealed unit to provide an elegant and refined look. Georgian bars are an attractive and economic alternative to astragal bars.
Astragal "Plant On" Authentic Bar
The Authentic Georgian bar is a premium option where the Georgian bar is planted on the surface of both the inside and the outside of the window. Inside the double glazed unit a duplex bar used that recreates the spacer bar, this makes each square look like individual glass found in traditional Georgian windows.
